Studying for an exam? Retrieval practice and spacing beat re-reading

Most exam prep is re-reading and highlighting — techniques that feel productive because the material becomes familiar. Learning science is brutal about this: familiarity isn't knowledge. The two interventions with the strongest evidence are testing yourself and spacing it out.

The testing effect

In Roediger and Karpicke's classic experiments, students who studied a passage and then practised recalling it remembered substantially more a week later than students who spent the same time re-studying — even though the re-studiers predicted they'd do better. Retrieval isn't a way of measuring learning; it is learning. Karpicke and Blunt later showed in Science that retrieval practice outperformed even elaborate concept-mapping on subsequent tests.

The practical upshot: every study session should force recall before and after new material — flashcards, closed-book brain dumps, practice questions with explanations read for every miss.

The spacing effect

Cepeda and colleagues' review of hundreds of comparisons confirmed one of psychology's oldest findings: the same study time spread across sessions beats the same time massed into one — dramatically, at long retention intervals. Their follow-up work suggests the optimal gap between reviews scales with how long you need to remember: roughly 10–20% of the retention interval. Studying for an exam three months out? Reviews spaced days-to-weeks apart, not crammed the night before.

A session shape that uses both

  1. 10 min — flashcard recall of everything covered so far (spaced retrieval).
  2. 30–35 min — one new topic, actively read.
  3. 20 min — quiz on the new topic; read every explanation, right or wrong.
  4. 10 min — write a one-line rule for each miss; add to the deck.

Add two full timed practice exams — one around three-quarters of the way through, one near the end — and a consolidation week before the exam with nothing new, only recall.
