How to build an A-level revision timetable that survives contact with May
Most revision timetables are built once, in a burst of enthusiasm, in a colour-coded grid — and abandoned within a fortnight. Not because the person was lazy, but because the timetable was built to look complete rather than to be followed.
A revision timetable has exactly one job: make sure every topic gets seen more than once, spaced apart, with the last pass landing shortly before that subject's paper. Everything else is decoration.
Start from the timetable, not from today
A-levels in England are linear — everything is examined at the end — and the exam season runs from roughly mid-May into late June. Your three subjects will have between six and nine separate papers between them, spread across those six weeks, and they will not be evenly spaced.
That matters more than anything else on this page. If your first paper is 14 May and your last is 22 June, those two subjects need completely different plans. Revising them at the same intensity, at the same time, wastes the five extra weeks the second subject actually has.
So the first step is not making a grid. It is finding your exam board's published timetable and writing down the date of every single paper. AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC/Eduqas all publish theirs well over a year ahead, and your school will confirm them. Until you have those dates, any timetable you build is guessing.
Work backwards from each paper
For every paper, put its final revision pass in the two or three days before it. Then work backwards: a consolidation pass roughly two to three weeks earlier, and first coverage of that material earlier still. Each subject gets its own countdown. They overlap, and that is fine — that is what the plan is for.
Interleave subjects. Do not block them.
The instinct is to give each subject a week: Chemistry this week, History next. It feels organised and it is the single most common way to lose the benefit of the whole exercise.
Spacing works because you come back to material after you have started to forget it — the effort of retrieving it is what strengthens the memory. Block a subject into one week and you get the opposite: everything fresh, nothing effortful, and six weeks of decay before you touch it again.
Two to three subjects a day, rotating. It feels less tidy and less productive. It is substantially more effective, and the effect is well replicated. The research behind spacing and retrieval practice is worth ten minutes of your time before you plan anything.
Test yourself. Do not re-read.
Re-reading notes and highlighting produce a strong feeling of familiarity and very little durable memory. It is the best-documented illusion in the whole of study research: the material feels known because it feels easy, and easy is precisely the wrong signal.
Every session should start with retrieval — blurt the topic onto a blank page, work past-paper questions, run flashcards — and reading should only be used to patch the gaps that retrieval exposes. That is uncomfortable, and the discomfort is the mechanism.
Past papers, timed, from about halfway
Past papers are not a final-week check. From roughly the midpoint of your plan, work them under time and mark them against the actual mark scheme, not against your own sense of whether the answer was decent. Mark schemes reward specific things, and finding out which ones in April is far better than finding out in the exam hall.
Keep an error log per subject — every question you got wrong and why — and re-quiz it weekly. That log becomes the most valuable document you own by about week eight, because it is a personalised list of exactly what you do not know.
The three phases
- Coverage. Every topic in every specification gets a first pass, with a quiz at the end of each session. The goal is no blank spots, not mastery.
- Consolidation. Weak topics get a second and third pass, weighted by what the error log says. Weekly timed papers begin.
- Exam season. Once the papers start, each subject gets its final pass in the days before its own exam, and drops out of the rotation afterwards. Leave recovery slots — the day after a paper is worth less than you think.
Four mistakes that cost the most
- Building the timetable instead of revising. An afternoon of colour-coding feels like work and produces nothing. Ten minutes is enough.
- Planning ten-hour days. A plan you miss twice gets abandoned; a plan you hit gets repeated. Three or four genuine sessions of 45–60 minutes beats a fantasy schedule every time.
- Treating a missed day as failure. It is a data point. The measure that matters is what proportion of sessions you hit over a month, not whether the run is unbroken — rigid streaks actually cause abandonment after the first miss.
- Cutting sleep. Consolidation happens while you sleep. Revising past midnight trades the mechanism for the appearance of effort.
Roughly how much time
There is no universal number, and anyone quoting one is guessing about your subjects, your starting point and your school day. What is more useful is a shape: most people can sustain two to four focused sessions on a school day and four to six at weekends or on study leave, with one full rest day a week. Start below what you think you can manage. It is far easier to add a session than to recover from three weeks of falling short.
Questions
When should I start? Serious coverage from January is realistic for most people; earlier is better if mocks exposed real gaps. What matters more than the start date is that the plan reaches every topic twice before study leave.
What if my exam timetable is not out yet? Plan coverage anyway — it does not depend on exact dates. Rebuild the last six weeks once the timetable is published.
What about mocks? Treat them as a diagnostic, not a verdict. The error log they produce is the most useful thing you will get all year.
