Why tracking progress works: the evidence for self-monitoring

You can't steer what you don't see. Of all the techniques behaviour-change science has tested, monitoring your own progress is one of the most consistently effective — and one of the easiest to get wrong by making it a chore.

What the research says

In a meta-analysis of 138 randomised trials covering more than 19,000 participants, Harkin and colleagues asked a simple question: if you prompt people to monitor their goal progress more often, do they achieve more? The answer was a clear yes — a reliable medium-sized effect (d ≈ 0.40) on goal attainment across health, money and other domains. Two details matter for anyone building a tracking routine:

This sits on a wider foundation. In Michie and colleagues' taxonomy work on behaviour-change techniques, self-monitoring combined with other self-regulation techniques (goal setting, feedback, action planning) marks out the interventions that actually work. And there's a warning in the literature too: Webb and colleagues describe “the ostrich problem” — people actively avoid looking at progress data precisely when they fear it's bad, which is when monitoring matters most.
